After a contentious first week of voting in the House of Representatives for a Speaker, the members of Congress finally voted for Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. One of the names being tapped for speaker to challenge Kevin McCarthy was Jim Jordan of Ohio. However, Jim Jordan refused the nomination in favor of becoming the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, the position he now occupies. But what is the House Judiciary Committee and what made it so attractive to Jim Jordan?

According to the official website of judiciary.house.gov, the Judiciary Committee is the second oldest committee formed by Congress with the power to investigate criminal activity amongst other responsibilities. The Chair is usually occupied by someone with a legal background. The responsibility of the Committee includes civil and criminal proceedings as well as other responsibilities.

Jim Jordan's first investigation as Chair revolves around President Biden's classified documents, one day after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed US Attorney Robert Hur to investigate.
